5 Reasons for TUX - Texas User Experience

So this spring 2010, I am starting a student group call TUX, Texas User Experience. The main purposes of this group are,

• Share professional user experience knowledge and the best practices.
• Provide students with real world exercises to build UX portfolio.
• Raises the awareness of user experience design in every aspect of business.

5 Reason Why You Should Join in Spring 2010
Graduate with Strong Online Portfolio
Online portfolio is must have when you are looking for a job these days. Regardless of your profession, the companies want to see what you have done and what you are capable of. 'Portfolio is for a designer or advertising students!' You can now rest that idea in year 2009, because the things are changing rapidly. You need to find a way to market and differentiate yourself from your competitors by providing easy access to your practices and experiences. At the end of every semester, TUX will produce series of case studies, blog posts, and other contents to share with the members. You will have access to edit, add, download, and reuse these contents to show your involvement and experience.

Expand your knowledge
User experience skill set is more demanding these days. By sharing UX knowledge with your peers, and the real world professionals, you will be able to expand your skill sets in this field. Simply put, you will have more stuffs to write under your Skills section in the resume.

Learn and apply real world UX practices
One of our main goals is to share and exercise the real world UX practices together. Some of the examples are: card sorting, wire framing, user studies, information architeucture, and usability testing methods. We also hope to work on at least one real world paid project per semester.

Network with real world professionals
I am currently working for a design agency and already have built personal networks with local UX professionals. I will be able to invite these professionals for speaking and workshop sessions. Who knows, they are looking to hire someone as well?

Become the founding members
This probably is the biggest reason why you should join this semester. You will be the leader of this group and you will have chance to showcase your leadership skills. It also give you chance to work on your leadership skills as well.
